2018 Hyundai Sonata Earns High Marks from IIHS - September 7, 2017

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai's flagship midsize sedan, has earned an impressive designation of being a "Top Safety Pick+" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

To earn this designation, a vehicle needs to earn good rating across five crash tests: small front overlap, moderate front overlap, side impact, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. The sedan also had to be equipped with either advanced or superior crash avoidance technology and and have acceptable or good-rated headlights.

When equipped with automatic emergency braking, the 2018 Sonata earned a superior rating and was able to avoid a collision in both the low-speed 12 mph test and high-speed 25 mph test.

What really highlights the Sonata's excellent design, however, is that it was able to receive the "+" mark two years in a row.

The 2018 Sonata earned a five-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA, with five stars in all but one category, where it earned a four-star rating in the rollover evaluations conducted by the government safety regulator.

For 2018, the Hyundai Sonata is equipped with optional lane departure warning with lane keep assist, blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control with start/stop capability.
